JAMB is marked using a simple system; you need your JAMB to be calculated so you can easily check the result. Students, today we want you to Understanding How JAMB Marks Each Question to get your average JAMB score, and the use of negative marking in the scheme.
If you are aware of how JAMB score subjects, you can improve your chances in the exam. The UTME score a student gets is the sum of all the correct answers, that is, it ranges from 0 to 400 and helps determine if they will be admitted to a school.
If you want to learn how your JAMB score affects your Admission, see the post titled: Jamb Marking Scheme 2026/2027 For All Subjects.
JAMB Grading System
JAMB offers 180 questions, with most of these (60) focused on English language, and each of the other subjects is tested with just 40 questions. All subjects have the same total score of one hundred (100), but for Use of English each question is not given the same mark.
Some questions, therefore, have one (1) mark just to make sure that the higher standard of others is balanced out.
Now we are going to take a look at how Jamb marks one of the most important O”level Subjects.( ENGLISH LANGUAGE)
Let us take a look at some examples below:
Suppose a student named Tolu is convinced he scored 32 in Mathematics and knows for sure that he did ( according to the JAMB Marking scheme given), how much would this interest John earn in the JAMB Subject
All things considered, answering the final questions correctly, John will end up with 80 marks in Mathematics.
Let’s understand how this score was reached.
80 is equal to John’s score, as he answered 32 questions with 2.5 mark for each correct answer.
therefore, John reaching all 40 questions correctly results in 40 * 2.5 = 100
Applying the procedures mentioned above will help you arrive at a Jamb score for each subject apart from Use of English.

How Does JAMB Mark Each Subject?
You are not allowed to get more than a score of 400 in JAMB. I have just what I am meant to have. In fact, it’s possible. Since there’s no negative marking, even if you get a question wrong the marks you have will not be taken away.
Let me point out the most interesting part here. Some questions are more important than others when you’re taking the Use of English section.
The use of English part has 60 questions. The scores from each section are added together for the final result. other 3 subjects have 40 questions and each question is valued at 2.5 marks.
A student can get up to 100 marks for each subject. All together: English = 100 marks Subject 2 = 100 marks Subject 3 = 100 marks Subject 4 = 100 marks, which makes the Grand Total = 400 Marks.
Getting to know how each JAMB question is marked helps while you are preparing for the UTME exam. Since knowing the grading, question marks, and the way the score is reached helps, you can approach the exam more confidently. It’s best to try every question in the exam because you won’t lose points if you get them wrong.
Now that you understand the exam marking, you are likely to organize your study routine and score more points. Every vote counts, so using a wise strategy is very important.
