Ummi refers to her association with children as intimate, open and nurturing. Rodriguez portrays the character of a mother who is caring and participatory in the lives of her children to the extent that she does not only take care of her kids but even takes time to educate them morally and intellectually. Ummi also talks openly with her children throughout The Life Changer, demonstrating that they do not have any problem expressing themselves, formulating opinions, and asking questions.
She also claims the role of a mentor and a storyteller as she can use real life stories and own experiences in order to teach about the life crucial lessons. She does not sound very strict and harsh, but she talks with warmth, patience, and wisdom. It demonstrates that she is close to her children, trusts them, and has equal respect and an emotional connection, making it possible to affect her children positively and in a significant manner.
